Unveiling the Wonders of Oahu: 9 Must-Do Activities for an Unforgettable Hawaiian Adventure

Aloha, fellow travelers! Welcome to Oahu, the heart and soul of Hawaii. Whether you're seeking tranquility or in search of unforgettable family memories, this mesmerizing island has something for everyone. From the crystal-clear waters of Kaneohe Bay to historic Pearl Harbor, join me as we embark on a journey to discover some of my favorite things to do in Oahu.

1. Helicopter Tour

Hands down, my number one first choice of things to do is take a helicopter tour around the island. I recommend planning your tour as the first thing you do on the island. There's plenty of options when it comes to arial tours, and picking the right one is going to make or break your experience. We opted for the Blue Skies of Oahu Tour by Blue Hawaiian Helicopters-Oahu for our full island tour.

Soaring high above is the best way to get a birds-eye layout of the entire island. You'll discover hidden beaches, hiking trails, and small towns you may not have thought twice about before seeing them in person from above. Your pilot will explain how to get to these places and also share helpful tips along the way.

You'll get to experience sights that are off limits by land such as stunning waterfalls and jagged mountain peaks. And, as you fly over Pearl Harbor, you'll witness the sunken ships lying just below the surface of the water. This is not something you can grasp the full magnitude of from the ground. Experiencing this graveyard from above is a poignant reminder of the destruction and loss of life that occurred and a truly humbling experience. Additionally, unless you hold an Active-Duty Military ID, you must reserve seats on the Ford Island Bus Tour in order to see the USS Utah and several other sites as they are on an active military base. While I absolutely recommend taking that tour, seeing these sites from above is another way to experience them, especially if time is tight on your trip.

There's so many helicopter tour options to choose from based on the experience you want. If you're brave enough, you can even choose a "doors-off" tour like this Royal Crown of Oahu 60 minute tour from Rainbow Helicopters!

2. Snorkeling in Kaneohe Bay

Imagine swimming amidst a kaleidoscope of neon fish, vibrant coral reefs, and graceful sea turtles. Kaneohe Bay is a snorkeler's dream come true! It's the largest sheltered water on the island and home to the largest saltwater sandbar in the world. With crystal-clear waters, this stunning bay offers an unforgettable underwater adventure for both adults and kids alike. Whether you're a novice or an experienced snorkeler, you'll be mesmerized by the incredible marine life that calls Kaneohe Bay home.

We wouldn't have chosen the Kaneohe Bay over the more famous touristy Hanauma Bay unless we had seen it from above, but I'm so glad we did! Unlike Hanauma Bay, you don't have to have advanced reservations and renting a kayak and snorkel gear was easy and inexpensive at the state park. You could opt for a guided excursion, and I recommend this Kaneohe Sandbar Snorkeling Tour by Captain Bruce Private Yacht Charters for an experience full of activities like paddle boarding, swimming, and snorkeling in some of the best hidden places in the bay. If you'd rather go it alone like we did, you can rent one and two person kayaks from Kama'aina Kayak and Snorkle Eco-Tours. They put us right in the water with our kayaks and snorkel gear and sent us out to explore!

Step back in time and pay tribute to the heroes who shaped world history at Pearl Harbor. Explore the USS Arizona Memorial, a somber reminder of the fateful day that launched the United States into World War II. Wander through the interactive exhibits at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, gaining insights into the events that unfolded on December 7, 1941.

You have to reserve ferry tickets to visit the USS Arizona Memorial and can do so at recreation.gov the U.S. governments central reservation and planning platform. When you're finished there, head over to the Mighty Missouri for a tour through one of the world's most famous battleships or take the Ford Island Bus Tour to visit the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma Memorials. This remarkable experience is a must for history enthusiasts and an opportunity to honor the sacrifices made by those who came before us.

Opt for a guided tour to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and USS Arizona with pick up from your Hotel in Waikiki with this Salute to Pearl Harbor tour by E Noa Tours. For a complete tour with visits to all the sites plus a sightseeing drive through downtown Honolulu, try the Pearl Harbor Remembered tour also by E Noa Tours. You can't put a price on the knowledge you gain from an experienced guide, and it's sure to make your trip more impactful and memorable.

I found this gorgeous old oil painting, and it was love at first sight! I negotiated her down to $30, and I packaged her up and mailed her home!

From the world-famous Waikiki Beach with its golden sands and gentle waves to the secluded Lanikai Beach with its turquoise waters and magnificent views of the Mokulua Islands, you'll find your own slice of paradise. Soak up the sun, take a dip, or simply relax under the shade of swaying palm trees. Explore some of the rocky tide pools and if you're lucky, you'll see some sea turtles catching their own waves. Oahu's beaches offer endless opportunities for water sports, picnics, and building sandcastles with your loved ones, and the best part, they're all free!

During the show, you'll be transported to a world where ancient Hawaiian legends come to life. Talented performers will regale you with captivating stories through hula dances, chants, and songs. The graceful movements of the dancers, adorned in colorful costumes, will leave you spellbound as they tell tales of love, bravery, and the connection between man and nature.
