Athens has a history that spans over 3,000 years; it's hard to imagine that two thousand years ago, the Romans were still referring to Athens as "Ancient" Greece!

1. Acropolis of Athens
The Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the crown jewel of Athens. Perched high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city, the Acropolis is a breathtaking collection of ancient temples, the most famous of which is the Parthenon. This architectural marvel was dedicated to the goddess Athena and is a stunning example of Doric architecture. Due to the central location and relative height of the Acropolis, it's pretty much impossible to miss it, and everywhere boasts "Acropolis Views."
Tip: The terrain around the Acropolis, including the pathways leading to the Parthenon, can be uneven. To explore comfortably, wear sturdy and comfortable walking shoes or sneakers that provide good support. Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday crowds and heat. The best time to visit Athens is anytime you can get there. During the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) the weather is pleasant, and the city is less crowded. We visited in mid November and experienced perfect weather and enough crowds to mean the sites would be open, but not enough that we had to wait in line. Avoid the peak summer months if you're not a fan of sweltering heat and large crowds, but I certainly wouldn't let that detour me if that was the only time I could visit. Winter (December to February) can be a good option for travelers who prefer milder weather and fewer tourists, but keep in mind that some attractions may have shorter opening hours during this season.

Athens is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own unique character.
