La Isla del Encanto: Top Five Family-Friendly Activities in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico...rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. This enchanting island holds a special place in my heart as both my paternal grandparents were from Puerto Rico. I love the laid-back lifestyle of La Isla del Encanto (The Island of Enchantment). Couple that with my passion for cultural exploration and we have the perfect destination for unforgettable family adventures.

Puerto Rico is just a hop, skip, and a nonstop jump from many U.S. airports, and Americans don't need a passport to get there. For parents seeking the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure, the island provides a plethora of options that cater specifically to the interests of children and teens. In this blog post, I'll explore my top five family-friendly activities that I love in Puerto Rico. So, let's dive right in!

1. El Yunque National Forest: Nature's Classroom

Nestled in the lush northeastern mountains of Puerto Rico, El Yunque (pronounced yoon-kay) National Forest is a treasure trove of biodiversity. It's an ideal destination for families seeking an educational and exciting outdoor experience. Did you know that El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System?

The forest is home to two species only found in Puerto Rico. The first, the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot, is the only parrot native to North America. In the 1970s there were only 13 left in Puerto Rico. Today, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts, there are more than 500.

The other is the coquí frog, a symbol of Puerto Rico. The coquí (pronounced co-kee) is named after the distinctive sound it makes, "co-kee." The whistle of the coquí is deeply ingrained in Puerto Rican culture and is often associated with the island's natural beauty. It is not uncommon to hear the coquí's call during warm evenings in Puerto Rico.

Planning Tips for El Yunque:

  • Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for hiking.

  • Bring insect repellent, water, and sunscreen.

  • Check the weather forecast, as rain showers are common in the "rain"forest. Don't let that stop you though. Come prepared, and you won't be disappointed!

  • Consider a private tour to discover hidden secrets and locations only a local would know about. I highly recommend this Yunque Rainforest Private Tour by Puerto Rican native and small business JM Adventure Tours.

Why El Yunque is great for kids.

  • It provides an educational experience about tropical ecosystems and a chance to see a variety of unique wildlife.

  • It offers family-friendly hiking trails with breathtaking views.

  • There are tons of waterfalls and swimming holes to explore.

2. Bioluminescent Bays: A Natural Light Show

Puerto Rico is home to no less than three bioluminescent bays, each offering a unique and enchanting experience:

Mosquito Bay, located on the island of Vieques, is renowned as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. The bay is teeming with dinoflagellates that emit a mesmerizing blue-green glow when disturbed, creating a stunning natural light show. Guided boat tours or kayak excursions are popular ways to witness this phenomenon.

Nestled in the coastal town of La Parguera on Puerto Rico's southwestern coast, the La Parguera Bio Bay is illuminated by the bioluminescence of Pyrodinium bahamense, a different organism than those found in Mosquito Bay. This bay offers guided boat tours and my all time favorite Puerto Rican experience, a unique night swimming experience. Teens will love the rush of adrenaline they'll get from turning off all the lights on the boat and jumping into pitch black waters! As soon as they hit the water the world lights up with a surreal ethereal glow that a regular camera can't capture. The vibrant marine life and mangrove channels surrounding La Parguera add an extra layer of natural beauty to the overall experience and provide ideal snorkeling conditions during the day.

Laguna Grande is another captivating bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico located in the northeastern town of Fajardo near San Juan. The bay is home to a high concentration of dinoflagellates, and guided kayak tours are a popular way to explore its mystical waters. There's even an eco friendly electric boat tour that's perfect for all ages.

Planning Tips for Bio Bays:

  • Book a boat or kayak tour to fully appreciate the phenomenon.

  • Bioluminescence is most vivid during the new moon phase when the night sky is darkest. Check the lunar calendar before planning your visit to ensure optimal conditions for witnessing the glow.

Why visit a bio bay with kids?
